Community Involvement

Picture

CFUW Haliburton Highlands has been involved in the community through various efforts over the years. With the formation of the Community Involvement Committee in 2016 a concerted approach was put forth to determine what the community needs are and how could our club best assist.  We gleaned insights about advocacy with the help of the CFUW Ontario Council and researched community needs; our work to date has resulted in a number of community initiatives.  These initiatives include:

  • Support of the local women’s shelter, YWCA HERS (Haliburton Emergency Rural Safety) through a needs drive at each of our monthly meetings.
  • Partnering with the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre to support the “Take Back The Night” event which will take place September 20, 2018.
  • Sponsoring, in partnership with Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre and Those Other Movies in Haliburton, the airing of the documentary “A Better Man”, a documentary about the broad reaching impact of sexual assault and harassment and healing through ownership of action.
  • As a member of the Poverty Reduction Strategy coalition for Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County, we are advocating for poverty reduction in the area, which affects many facets of living in a rural community.
