WHO WE AREThe Canadian Federation of University Women Haliburton Highlands (CFUW-HH) is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization who’s purpose is to promote and encourage the higher education of women and girls, to improve human rights and the status of women, to encourage an informed interest in public affairs, and to serve the community.
CFUW-HH provides an annual bursary of $500.00 to a young woman graduate of Haliburton Highlands Secondary School and Haliburton School of Art + Design (Fleming College) who are proceeding with higher education. The club collaborates with community organizations such as the local women’s center, YWCA-HERS (Haliburton Emergency Rural Safety), Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre and Those Other Movies in Haliburton. We are also a member of the Poverty Reduction Strategy coalition for Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. At monthly meetings held on the third Thursday of the month, Sept to June, at 7:00pm, members enjoy informative speakers on a wide range of topics. Friendships are developed and members continue to learn through interest groups, such as Book Clubs, Cuisine Groups, Bridge Groups, Hiking and Learning Groups to name a few. Fundraising events occur during the year, which enable our club to further the purpose of CFUW-HH. CFUW-HH is part of a national organization (CFUW) with clubs across Canada. CFUW holds special consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and belongs to the Education Committee of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. CFUW regularly sends a delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Membership is open to all women who support the goals of these organizations.
